The Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS), Ministry of Ayush, through its Central Ayurveda Research Institute (CARI), Bengaluru, is organising a two-day International Conference on Ayurveda and Integrative Approaches to Obesity & Metabolic Syndrome on 1–2 December 2025 at the A.V. Rama Rao Auditorium, Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru. The conference coincides with the celebration of the 57th Foundation Day of CCRAS, an autonomous body under the Ministry of Ayush

Organised in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and NIMHANS, the conference seeks to address the rising global burden of obesity and metabolic syndrome through evidence-based Ayurvedic and integrative medical approaches. The scientific event reflects the Ministry of Ayush’s vision to strengthen research-driven integrative healthcare and advance global health outcomes.

Highlighting the importance of this initiative, Hon’ble Minister of State (IC) for Ayush and Minister of State for Health & Family Welfare, Shri Prataprao Jadhav, mentioned, “India continues to strengthen its work in integrative healthcare, and Ayurveda is central to this transformation. Obesity and metabolic disorders are among the most pressing public-health challenges of our time. This conference reflects our resolve to strengthen evidence-based approaches that combine the knowledge of Ayurveda with the rigor of modern medical  science. The Government of India is committed to promoting research, innovation, and interdisciplinary collaboration to enhance global health outcomes.”

The Secretary, Ministry of Ayush, emphasised, “The rising burden of metabolic diseases demands collaborative, science-driven solutions. Ayurveda offers a holistic, preventive and personalised approach, which becomes even more powerful when integrated with contemporary biomedical advancements. This conference is an important step towards expanding India’s leadership in integrative research, strengthening clinical evidence, and shaping future health policies.”

Dr. Rabinarayan Acharya, Director General, CCRAS, emphasised the scientific relevance of the conference and informed “In an era where metabolic diseases are escalating at an alarming rate, the holistic insights of Ayurveda offer powerful and practical solutions. This conference is designed to bridge traditional Ayurvedic knowledge with cutting-edge biomedical research through evidence-based dialogue. The outcomes will contribute meaningfully to integrative care frameworks, translational research and global health policy.”

Dr. Sucholachana Bhatt, the Unit Head and Organizing Secretary of the seminar, mentioned that "The conference brings together leading experts from Ayurveda and modern biomedical sciences to address the growing challenge of obesity and metabolic disorders through evidence-based integrative approaches. She added that the release of a special issue of CCRAS’ research journal JDRAS on Obesity & Metabolic Disorders, along with ten other books, reflects the depth of ongoing research and the commitment to advancing scientific dialogue and integrative healthcare.”

The conference brings together leading experts from Ayurveda, modern medicine, life sciences, and public health from India and abroad. The academic programme features plenary sessions, parallel scientific sessions, and a symposium on translational science and integrative management of Type-2 Diabetes, Obesity and Dyslipidemia. A specialised Workshop on Nanotechnology & Molecular Biology will be conducted on 2 December at the TCS Smart-X Hub, IISc. A Health Screening Camp by Samatvam, PathShodh and CARI will run on both days. Pre-conference virtual scientific deliberations were held from 25–27 November 2025. A special issue of CCRAS’ research journal JDRAS on Obesity & Metabolic Disorders, along with 10 other books, will also be released during the event.

More than 700 delegates are expected to participate, with 267 oral presentations, 120 virtual paper presentations, 70 posters, and 16 keynote and plenary talks by eminent scientists, clinicians and researchers.

The International Conference on Ayurveda and Integrative Approaches to Obesity & Metabolic Syndrome underscores CCRAS’s commitment to advancing integrative research, strengthening global collaborations and promoting evidence-based innovation aligned with India’s vision for holistic and accessible healthcare.

Pharmacopoeia Commission for Indian Medicine & Homoeopathy Concludes

Five-Day National Capacity Building Training Programme for ASU&H Stakeholders

The Pharmacopoeia Commission for Indian Medicine & Homoeopathy (PCIM&H), Ministry of Ayush, successfully concluded a five-day National Capacity Building Training Programme for Drug Enforcement Officers, Quality Control Personnel and drug manufacturers of Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani and Homoeopathy (ASU&H) drugs. The programme was organized from 24th to 28th November 2025 with the objective of strengthening national capabilities in quality assurance, standardization and regulatory compliance in the ASU&H drug sector.

The training programme featured a comprehensive blend of expert lectures, demonstrations and field visits. During the first two days, participants attended detailed technical sessions on NABL Accreditation, Quality Management Systems, Good Manufacturing Practices, Pharmacognostic, Physico-chemical and Phytochemical Evaluation and Quality Control of Herbal Drugs. On the third day, sessions on Shelf-life Studies and Regulatory Frameworks were followed by exposure visits to leading manufacturing units including Dr. Willmar Schwabe India Pvt. Ltd., Noida and Hamdard Laboratories, Ghaziabad. The fourth day focused on Microbiological and Pharmacological Evaluation, Regulatory Aspects and hands-on laboratory-based training, along with a visit to an Herbal Garden. The final day included lectures on Pharmacopoeia, Metal & Mineral Drug Standardization and Modern Instrumentation used in ASU&H drug quality control.

A total of 37 participants representing regulatory authorities, research councils, pharmaceutical industries and academic institutions from across the country joined the programme. The training enabled participants to gain first-hand knowledge on the latest advancements in quality testing and standardization practices within the Indian traditional medicine sector.

The valedictory session was graced by Prof. (Dr.) B. L. Mehra, Chairperson, National Commission for Indian System of Medicine, Ministry of Ayush, as Chief Guest. Also present were Dr. Jai Prakash, Senior Principal Scientific Officer and Officer-in-Charge, Pharmacovigilance Programme of India (PvPI), Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission; Dr. Ravinder Singh, Director, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India; and Dr. Raman Mohan Singh, Director, PCIM&H. The dignitaries emphasized the significance of rigorous quality control, global standards and scientific validation in strengthening the credibility and acceptance of Indian traditional medicine systems.

Participants expressed high appreciation for the programme, noting that the combination of theoretical sessions, practical training and field exposure greatly enhanced their understanding of Pharmacopoeial Standards, Good Manufacturing Practices and related regulatory frameworks. The initiative is expected to contribute significantly to the ongoing efforts toward building a robust national quality assurance ecosystem for ASU&H drugs.

The Ministry of Ayush, in collaboration with the All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA), Goa, will host the 10th National Ayurveda Day tomorrow. The celebrations will be inaugurated by Union Minister of State (Independent Charge), Ministry of Ayush, Shri Prataprao Jadhav. Shri Shripad Yesso Naik, Union Minister of State, Ministry of Power and Ministry of New & Renewable Energy, will also be present on the occasion. This year’s Ayurveda Day will highlight the enduring legacy of Ayurveda and its contribution to health and ecological sustainability under the theme “Ayurveda for People, Ayurveda for Planet.”

To mark the occasion, the National Dhanwantari Ayurveda Awards 2025 will be presented to distinguished contributors in the field of Ayurveda. The event will also include the inauguration of several facilities at AIIA Goa Hospital, such as the Integrative Oncology Unit, Central Sterile Supply Department, Blood Storage Unit, Hospital Linen Processing Care Unit, and the Ran-Bhaji Utsav, a festival showcasing local forest vegetables.

The celebration will also feature important collaborations through the signing of Memoranda of Understanding. These include an international MoU for academic exchange in traditional medicine, a tripartite MoU on integrative oncology, a MoU between AIIA New Delhi and Multani Pharmaceuticals for research in Dravyaguna, and a collaboration between AIIA Goa and the Goa Institute of Management.

Several new initiatives will be launched during the event. These include the release of guidelines on Ayush-related interventions by DPIIT, the launch of the nationwide campaign “Desh ka Swasthya Parikshan” for community health status assessment using the CCRAS-Swasthya Assessment Scale, the unveiling of a website dedicated to achievers in Ayurveda, and the roll-out of the “DRAVYA” portal (Digitized Retrieval Application for Versatile Yardstick of Ayush Substances) developed by CCRAS.

Ayurveda Day will also see the release of publications such as “25 Years Journey of NMPB,” “Campus Flora” of AIIA Goa, “Ayurveda for Sports Medicine,” and “Ayurveda Insight for Restful Sleep.” Technical releases will include the algorithm for integrative management of leukemia by the Centre for Integrative Oncology, a study on wound healing from Sushrut Samhita, the Ayush Innovation Readiness Framework (abridged version), and a compendium titled “Seeds of Innovation” from the Navapravartan Idea Hackathon 1.0.

The event programme will also include the release of guidelines for the management of PCOS, information and communication materials from AIIA Goa departments, grants to winners of Smart Hackathon 2024, and the launch of two new flavours of Poshak Cookies.

Through these diverse activities—covering awards, infrastructure inaugurations, MoUs, campaign launches, publications, protocols and innovations—the Ministry of Ayush seeks to strengthen the role of Ayurveda in modern healthcare and sustainability. The government has called for active public participation in the celebration, highlighting Ayurveda’s scientific merit and relevance for both people and the planet.

The Ministry of Ayush is all set to organize a two-day Departmental Summit themed “National Ayush Mission and Capacity Building in States” on 3rd and 4th September 2025 at the All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA), Sarita Vihar, New Delhi. The summit will be chaired by Shri Prataprao Jadhav, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge), Ministry of Ayush and Minister of State for Health & Family Welfare.

The upcoming summit aims to provide a platform for detailed discussions on State-Specific Notes and Feedback Notes received from State/UT officials, which also encompass grassroots-level inputs. Such a participatory approach is intended to strengthen and strategically expand the National Ayush Mission (NAM)—a flagship program that promotes holistic healthcare by integrating Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, Sowa Rigpa and Homeopathy systems.

The upcoming summit is the final event in a series of six thematic summits emphasized by the Prime Minister during the 4th Chief Secretaries’ Conference in 2025. These summits, held throughout the year, bring together officers from the Central Government and all States and Union Territories for focused deliberations on key themes, encouraging participation across all levels, including junior officers, to enhance capacity building.

In line with this vision, NITI Aayog identified six thematic areas for the summits. The “National Ayush Mission and Capacity Building in States” was selected as the sixth and final theme, with the Ministry of Ayush designated as the nodal ministry, supported by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare.

As per directives from NITI Aayog, the Ministry of Ayush has undertaken extensive preparatory activities including orientation sessions for all States and UTs and dissemination of the Concept Note (dated 6th May 2025).

To facilitate focused dialogue, six thematic sub-groups have been constituted, each addressing critical aspects of the mission and comprising 6-7 States/UTs. The sub-themes along with the working group States and lead Nodal States for coordination are:

Financial Management, Monitoring & Evaluation, Project Management: Rajasthan, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Chandigarh, West Bengal, Lakshadweep. Nodal States: Rajasthan & Mizoram.

Organizational Structure Review, including HR Strengthening & Capacity Building: Madhya Pradesh, Sikkim, Goa, Bihar, Delhi, Nagaland. Nodal States: Madhya Pradesh & Sikkim.

Integration of Ayush with Modern Health Care Services, including Public Health Programs: Chhattisgarh, Jammu & Kashmir, Haryana, Odisha, Ladakh, Arunachal Pradesh. Nodal States: Chhattisgarh & Arunachal Pradesh.

Quality Services under Ayush Facilities including Infrastructure, IPHS Ayush Standards, Healthcare Delivery: Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Telangana, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Tripura, Manipur. Nodal States: Uttar Pradesh & Himachal Pradesh.

Quality Assurance of Ayush Medicine and its Procurement System including Branding and Packaging: Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Puducherry, Assam. Nodal States: Karnataka & Assam.

IT-Enabled Digital Services in different sectors: Andhra Pradesh, Punjab, Maharashtra, Uttarakhand, Daman & Diu, Kerala. Nodal States: Kerala & Maharashtra.

The summit is expected to be graced by senior officials such as Additional Chief Secretaries, Principal Secretaries, Secretaries, Director Generals, Mission Directors, and Commissioners of Ayush from across the country. Eminent experts and panellists with distinguished credentials in the fields of Ayurveda, research, health policy, and digital governance have been invited to enrich the sessions. The list of experts includes Dr. V.K. Paul (Member, NITI Aayog), J L N Shastri (Ayurvedic Scholar), Dr. V. M. Katoch (Former Director General, ICMR), Prof. Bhushan Patwardhan, and many others.

The themes and corresponding State/UT groupings have been carefully outlined, covering areas from financial management and organizational reform to quality assurance and IT-enabled services. Each sub-theme is coordinated by two Nodal States, ensuring focused and effective deliberations.

This Departmental Summit reinforces the Government of India’s commitment to promoting Ayush systems as an integral part of the country’s healthcare architecture, enhancing accessibility, quality, and efficiency. In a significant milestone for global healthcare innovation, the World Health Organization (WHO) has released a technical brief titled "Mapping the Application of Artificial Intelligence in Traditional Medicine", acknowledging India’s pioneering efforts in integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) with traditional medicine systems, particularly Ayush systems. The release follows India’s proposal on the subject, leading to the development of WHO’s first-ever roadmap for applying AI in traditional medicine.

India’s efforts to harness the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to advance and amplify the strengths of its Ayush systems reflect the broader vision of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, who seeks to position the country as a global leader in digital health innovation and the integration of traditional medicine. Speaking at the inauguration of the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) Summit in 2023, Hon’ble  Prime Minister Modi remarked, “We have developed government policies and programmes inspired by the spirit of ‘AI for all’. Our endeavour is to take full advantage of the capabilities of AI for social development and inclusive growth.”

Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Ayush and Minister of State for Health & Family Welfare, Shri Prataprao Jadhav, remarked that India’s AI-led initiatives, mentioned in WHO’s technical brief, reflect the deep commitment of Indian scientists to advancing traditional medicine through cutting-edge technology. “This recognition underscores our alignment with Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji’s visionary call to harness emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence to expand the global relevance of Traditional Medicine. By integrating AI with Ayush systems—and through pioneering digital platforms such as the SAHI portal, NAMASTE portal, and the Ayush Research Portal—India is not only safeguarding its centuries-old medical wisdom but also leading the way in shaping a future of personalised, evidence-based, and globally accessible healthcare.”

Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, Secretary, Ministry of Ayush, said, “The WHO document highlights several pioneering AI-driven innovations led by India—ranging from predictive diagnostics using Prakriti-based machine learning models to the groundbreaking Ayurgenomics project that brings together Ayurveda knowledge and modern genomics. At the core of this digital transformation is the Ayush Grid—a comprehensive digital health platform launched in 2018—which serves as the foundation for several citizen-centric initiatives such as the SAHI portal, NAMASTE portal, and the Ayush Research Portal. Together, these AI-enabled platforms are not only preserving and validating India’s traditional knowledge systems of medicine but are also advancing their global integration within evidence-based, digital healthcare frameworks.”

This WHO publication not only validates India's growing influence in the global traditional medicine landscape but also acknowledges several key Indian innovations in the AI and Ayush space.

The document showcases a range of AI-driven applications in Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani, Sowa Rigpa, and Homoeopathy, including diagnosis support systems that integrate traditional methods like pulse reading, tongue examination, and Prakriti assessment with machine learning algorithms and deep neural networks. These efforts are enhancing diagnostic accuracy and enabling personalised preventive care.

One of the standout features in the WHO brief is the mention of Ayurgenomics, a scientific breakthrough that combines genomics with Ayurvedic principles. This initiative aims to identify predictive disease markers and personalise health recommendations using AI-based analysis of Ayurvedic constitution types. The document also highlights efforts to decode the genomic and molecular basis of herbal formulations for repurposing in modern disease conditions—a major leap in integrating traditional wisdom with contemporary science.

India’s initiatives to digitise traditional knowledge, such as the Traditional Knowledge Digital Library (TKDL), are praised as global models for the preservation and responsible use of indigenous medical heritage. Furthermore, AI-powered tools are being used for cataloguing and semantic analysis of ancient texts, enabling easier access to time-tested therapeutic knowledge.

Another critical aspect recognised by the WHO is the use of AI for drug action pathway identification, comparative studies across systems like Ayurveda, TCM, and Unani, and the development of artificial chemical sensors to assess traditional parameters such as Rasa, Guna, and Virya. These technological interventions are helping validate and modernise traditional formulations.

The document also applauds India’s broader efforts in incorporating digital platforms for online consultations, promoting digital literacy among Ayush practitioners, and building interoperable systems to integrate traditional medicine with mainstream healthcare.

The Ministry of Ayush welcomes this recognition as a testament to India’s leadership in creating a robust scientific ecosystem for traditional medicine. It also reaffirms the country's commitment to fostering global collaboration and responsible innovation, as envisioned under WHO’s broader framework for AI and traditional medicine.
